Fall in love with a "master" - STEFAN SAGMEISTER

Biography
Stefan Sagmeister was born in Bregenz, Austria in 1962. He first studied engineering after high school but then he changed his mind to do graphic design. In 1981, moved to Vienna and studied at the Vienna University of Applied Arts. Sagmeister graduated with the first class degree and a $1000 prize in 1985. Then he moved to New York to study at the Pratt Institute by winning the Fulbright scholarship. Returned to Austria for military service after 3 years, he was allowed to do community work in a refugee centre outside Vienna and finally came back to New York to work for Tibor Kalman at M&Co. 6 months later, Kalman closes M&Co and Sagmeister opens his own studio. From 1994, he had cooperated with many organizations and produced a lot of amazing posters and music album covers.

The idea was brilliant when he made the Awards Cup by arranging coffee cups and shot from above. Instead of generating the poster with computer help, Sagmeister really got people attention when hand-making the photograph and typography. “Behind a well done graphic, there was always a human” – as Adobe’s implication.

Trying to look good limits my life.
Sometimes when I need to design something, I often think of how to make it look smooth and beautiful. But this was difficult and I wasted a lot of time. Researching Stefan Sagmeister and his works help me understand my problems. I don’t have to design it beautiful, I have to design it significant. The way it looks is not important than the way it tells. Now I get a new experience of not always narrowing my creation by satisfying my eyes, just take it opened.
